The band Voices Of Decay was founded by Lukas and Christoph as a pure death metal band under the name Tombstone. The bassist Torggler and the singer Menz who joined the band at the beginning of 1997 completed its line-up.Already in the summer 1997, the band recorded within two days a demo CD. At that time it was not yet common for a South Tyrolean band to record in a professional studio. That is why the band from Merano and surroundings was probably one of the first local groups to do so. The demo was released under the name Voices of Decay. The fact that during the recording keyboard sounds were used, marked a change in the bands music style. From that point on, keyboards became a constituent part of their music. The band started mainly playing death metal and was soon able to build up a reputation in South Tyrol through its concerts and festival gigs. The drummer Martin who had become the fifth member of the group had to leave the band for health reasons prematurely in 1998. He was replaced by Mirko. At the beginning of 1999 the band signed a record deal with the new Italian label Gang Bang Promotions. In the summer of the same year, the debut album Nocturnal Domain was recorded in ten days and got good reviews from well-known magazines such as Rock Hard and Ablaze. As a consequence, the band wanted to record another album, but, as it was not possible to come to an agreement with the labeel for a further cooperation, and because of a continuing contract with Gang Bang Promotions, the band could not start recording for two years. At the end of 1999, the bassist Torggler left the band because of musical differences. After a long search Torggler was replaced by Markus, a long-standing friend.
